Naturally, it’s important to keep your kitchen clean and sanitary for the health and safety of your family. Here are some good habits to adopt that will let you easily maintain your kitchen’s appearance after you move into your new home.

Dishwasher – Once a month, remove the racks from your dishwasher and give them a good once over. Make sure you remove any food particles from the debris filter too. Mix together equal parts baking soda and white vinegar to create an effective cleaning solution.

Garbage disposal – This hard-working device should be cleaned every few days. Add a white vinegar and baking soda solution or a combination of lemon juice and carbonated water to the disposal and let the mixture sit for several minutes. Then, rinse the disposal with cold water and let it run for about 2-3 minutes. Another great trick is to freeze lemon slices in an ice cube tray. Once a week, you can drop one of these “lemon cubes” down the disposal and run the motor for several minutes to grind up the lemon, and leave your disposal smelling lemony fresh!

Walls – The areas behind and around your stove usually accumulate their fair share of grease and food splatters. Eliminate unsightly wall buildup by regularly wiping down the areas with a damp cloth – especially after cooking. For those extra tough stains, combine baking soda and water into a paste and apply to the area. Let it sit for a minute and then wipe the stain away.

Windows – Keep the light coming into your kitchen by wiping down the windows once a month. Warm water and mild soap can usually handle any grime. Be sure to protect your countertops and floors from any dripping water.

Countertops – Wipe counters down with dish detergent and water using a paper towel. Allow the counters to dry. Then, mix one tablespoon of bleach in a gallon of water and pour the solution into a spray bottle. Spray your kitchen surfaces with the bleach mixture and allow to air dry in order to kill moist household germs.

Floors and grout – Soapy water and a mop are usually enough to remove most spills or stains on your kitchen floor. You can freshen up dirty grout by applying a baking soda/water paste onto the stained areas and then spraying it with white vinegar. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes and then scrub away the stain with an old toothbrush.

Cookware / utensils – Take time during meal preparation to clean any of the cookware and utensils you’re using. This way, you won’t have so much to wash afterwards.
